About This Program

American Military University’s (AMU) undergraduate certificate in instructional design focuses on teaching adult learners in academic and nonacademic settings, such as government or corporate training environments.

AMU’s online program provides an exploration of the leading theories, research trends, evidence-based practices, and concepts of curriculum design to educate adult learners. Coursework explores:

This course serves as an introduction to major theories and empirical research regarding the role of interpersonal communication as it relates to personal, contextual, and cultural variables in the development of various types of relationships.

This course provides candidates, or course participants, with the knowledge and skills necessary to establish a classroom learning community in which they can organize and conduct effective instruction that challenges and involves learners. Successful classrooms exist because instructors have clear ideas about the most effective classroom conditions necessary for a healthy and intellectually stimulating learning environment. Course content will focus on the differences between teacher-centered and student-centered activities, considerations for adult learners, and addressing the needs of online, face-to-face, and hybrid learning contexts.

The course begins with comparing and contrasting adult learning (andragogy) to learning among children and adolescents (pedagogy). Examination of various theorists, theories, and practitioners; technology integration rationales; and application of theories to practice in online, face-to-face, and hybrid environments prepares students to plan, teach, and evaluate adult learning.

Course content focuses on classical conditioning, instrumental learning, principles of reinforcement, punishment and avoidance conditioning, stimulus generalization and discrimination, retention and forgetting, nature and functioning of memory, and learning and performance of motor skills.

Includes alumni who graduated with an associate, bachelor's, or master's degree from APUS. Student loan debt is defined as student loans and private education loans used for tuition, fees, living expenses, and book costs associated with courses taken at APUS. Many APUS students receive military tuition assistance and veterans education benefits, which are not student loan debt.

To minimize out-of-pocket costs, U.S. active-duty servicemembers, their spouse/dependents, National Guard members, and Reservists receive a tuition grant that caps undergraduate, master's degree, and graduate certificate tuition at $250/credit hour. In addition, a university book grant provides no-cost textbooks and ebooks for all undergraduates and military-tuition-grant-eligible master’s-level students.
