September 2022 Summer D: HIST480-The Roaring 20’s This special topics course will examine the myths and realities of America’s “Jazz Age,” the 1920s. Recognizably modern and yet nostalgic, this “era of meaningful nothingness” nevertheless masked a deep-seated insecurity felt by many Americans. This insecurity would be reflected by the nation’s immediate embrace of post-WWI isolationism in the 1920 Election. Nicknamed “the Age of Intolerance,” this decade presented many challenges to a staid American society, from political scandals to labor unrest; from new gender roles to expanding racial consciousness. From the Golden Age of Hollywood to the bitter fruits of Prohibition, the historical and cultural legacies of the Roaring Twenties are still with us today.
