How should student use AI?

Students should use artificial intelligence (AI) to learn––not to avoid learning. AI has quickly evolved from a futuristic technology into an everyday part of education.

Whether they’re balancing coursework, careers, family responsibilities, or military service, many students are incorporating AI into their daily study routines. They use AI tools to stay organized, answer questions, and explain difficult concepts.

But how should students use AI to strengthen their learning rather than simply complete assignments? Today, generative artificial intelligence is no longer an abstract concept but a practical learning resource for students at every educational level.

Students use AI tools based on their educational needs, which range from generating study guides to organizing their schedules. According to a recent study, 92% of undergraduates used AI on assignments and course work in 2025.

Today, AI tools are changing the way students learn. But are students using AI responsibly, ethically, and effectively?

Successful students should view artificial intelligence as a learning tool, not a quick shortcut for completing assignments. Students can use AI tools to enhance the learning process, support critical thinking while mastering difficult concepts, and improve academic performance. The goal isn’t to replace independent thinking––it’s to strengthen it.

 

Students Use AI Tools for Time Management and Organization

One of the keys to academic success is effectively managing time, energy, and responsibilities. Students often balance their coursework with careers, family responsibilities, military service, and other personal commitments.

Without a structured classroom schedule, online learners must often create their own routines and remain accountable for meeting deadlines. For many students, managing time in an online learning environment can be more challenging because it requires greater self-discipline and personal accountability.

AI can be used as a supportive tool to help with creating schedules, breaking larger projects into manageable tasks, and generating reminders for important deadlines. In addition, it can serve as a personalized tutor when needed and as a research assistant for verifying facts and citations in research work.

By reducing the mental effort required to stay organized, students can devote more time and energy to learning, critical thinking, and completing high-quality work. AI tools can help students increase their productivity and reduce stress.

 

Using AI for Brainstorming and Critical Thinking

Starting a new project or writing a paper often begins with one of the biggest challenges: a blank page. Whether they’re in high school, college, or graduate school, many students struggle with:

  • Generating ideas
  • Developing a thesis
  • Creating an outline
  • Narrowing their focus
  • Organizing their thoughts

Using AI for brainstorming and outlining can support writing tasks without replacing the student’s own creativity.

Students can ask AI to generate potential research questions, identify relevant themes, or create outlines for essays and presentations. They can also ask AI questions that encourage deeper thinking, explore alternative perspectives, or generate examples that help clarify a topic before they begin writing.

AI-generated ideas can spark creativity and student engagement while encouraging students to express concepts in their own words. When AI tools are used in this way, students use artificial intelligence ethically and maintain academic integrity.

AI tools can write an entire essay, but in the age of AI, students need to apply critical thinking when questioning information and evaluating the information provided by AI. Students should request that AI answers be presented from multiple viewpoints to allow independent analysis. Rather than accepting AI answers at face value, students should ask follow-up questions, compare multiple perspectives, and decide which ideas are supported by evidence.

Also, students should first develop their own ideas before consulting AI tools. Forming independent thoughts encourages deeper learning, while overreliance on AI may limit intellectual growth.

 

How Students Can Use AI for Research

Many undergraduate and graduate courses require students to create research papers. Before searching for reputable sources, students can use AI tools to identify specific keywords, summarize general concepts, and refine a research topic.

Generative AI tools can also help generate search strategies. As a preliminary research tool, AI can help students identify important themes, discover related concepts, and develop more effective search terms before exploring library databases or scholarly publications. This preliminary research can help students to locate credible sources.

However, students should remember that AI should be a starting point and not the final authority. Students should also remember that AI tools are not merely a replacement for academic sources.

Generative AI tools can help in many ways; however, the information they provide may occasionally be inaccurate or outdated. Consequently, students should always double-check any AI-generated information using other credible sources, such as:

  • Textbooks
  • Course materials
  • Peer-reviewed journals
  • Library resources

Understanding how AI tools work is equally important. AI systems generate responses by recognizing patterns in existing information, but they do not independently evaluate whether every response is complete, current, or accurate. Developing the habit of questioning, verifying, and comparing information from multiple reliable sources will strengthen both research skills and critical thinking.

 

Using Generative AI to Support Student Writing

AI can also serve as a learning tool to provide feedback on students’ writing. Many courses, especially online courses, require written assignments, such as discussion posts, presentations, and research papers.

A variety of generative AI tools can help students identify grammar or wording issues, improve organization, strengthen transitions, and identify areas that may need additional explanation or evidence. Students can ask AI tools to check their work for clarity and coherence.

Reviewing AI-generated feedback allows students to decide which suggestions improve their writing while preserving their own voice and ideas. Students then must decide whether to accept or reject the suggestions.

Good writing develops over time and reflects a student’s own ideas and voice. The final product should not be an entire essay generated by AI, but rather the student’s perspective, research, analysis, and academic effort. AI-generated text should be treated as a starting point for reflection – not as a finished assignment ready for submission.

 

Academic Integrity and Ethical AI

Every educational institution requires students to adhere to academic integrity policies, including responsible AI use. Students must use technology appropriately and responsibly, including ensuring the originality of their work and the ethical use of AI.

Using AI tools for tasks, such as brainstorming ideas, time management, and research skills, differs from submitting AI-generated content as their own work. The ethical use of AI means allowing technology to support learning rather than replace the effort required to think critically, solve problems, and communicate original ideas.

Students should also be mindful of data privacy when using AI platforms. It’s best to avoid entering personal information, confidential workplace materials, proprietary research, or other sensitive information into public AI systems. Using AI responsibly also means understanding what information should and should not be shared with these tools.

Students should view AI as a bridge that enhances the educational experience while strengthening the skills they will continue to use long after graduation.

 

How Should Students Use AI Responsibly?

As artificial intelligence becomes an increasingly common part of education, students who learn to use it responsibly will be better prepared for success both in the classroom and throughout their careers.

Successfully integrating AI into education means using it to strengthen students’ understanding. Teachers can also use artificial intelligence to help with routine tasks such as generating lesson plans, study material, and practice quizzes.

The students who will benefit most from AI won’t ask AI software to complete their work. Instead, they’ll use artificial intelligence to ask better questions, think critically, and continue learning.

So how should students use AI? They should use it responsibly––as a learning tool that encourages curiosity, supports critical thinking, and helps them become more knowledgeable, independent learners.

 

The Bachelor of Arts in Communication at AMU

For interested adult learners who want to improve their communication skills, American Military University part of American Public University System (“AMU”) offers an online Bachelor of Arts in Communication. For this degree, students can take courses involving topics such as ethics in communication, mass communication, and social media and society. Dr. Karolina Kopczyński is an associate professor of Spanish for the School of Arts, Humanities, and Education at American Military University part of American Public University System. She is a native of Poland, and her passion is learning foreign languages and their cultures. Dr. Kopczyński completed her study abroad program in Oviedo, Spain, and she also lived and studied in Russia, Mexico, and Greece.

Dr. Kopczyński obtained her M.A.T. in Spanish and ESOL from the School for International Training. She also completed her M.A. from the University of Jaén in Spain and the University Iberoamericana in Puerto Rico in Applied Linguistics in Teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language and Formation of Professors of Spanish as a Foreign Language. Furthermore, Dr. Kopczyński earned an M.A. in Psychology from American Public University and an M.Ed. in Learning and Technology from Western Governors University.

Dr. Kopczyński completed her Ed.D. from the University of Phoenix in Curriculum and Instruction. She received the 2021 Undergraduate Excellence in Teaching Award from American Public University System, is a co-advisor of the Spanish Club, and is also accredited by the International Coaching Federation as an Associate Certified Coach.

Dr. Kopczyński presented at the Teaching Excellence Summit on implementing Technology in Spanish Online Classes to increase participation. She has also presented at Northeast OER Summit about Interactive Tools to Engage Participation and MaFla about Podcasts for Presentational Communication and Communicative Tools for Interpretative Communication in Online Spanish Classes. She has been published in Scientific Research Publishing and Creative Education.
