About This Program

The undergraduate NanoCert in Geospatial Intelligence is a three-course program involving the study of geospatial information systems, applied geospatial intelligence, and geographic information systems.

What You Will Do

After successfully completing this NanoCert, the student will be able to:

  • Define Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and identify GIS data portals on the internet.
  • Describe spatial data and compare the different types of modeling in GIS and when they are appropriate for use in analysis.
  • Evaluate how the application of geospatial products can improve future military, intelligence, homeland defense, and law enforcement operations.
  • Apply geospatial intelligence analyses to regional or international challenges associated with homeland defense, weather disasters, law enforcement, or sources of conflict.
  • Demonstrate the skills to lay out, save, and export geospatial maps using the Toolwire virtual lab using the Esri Geographic Information Systems (ArcMap) software Version 10.1.
  • Implement basic ArcGIS functions relating to databases, layers, labels, and features.

The term “Geographic Information System” refers to the synthesis of information (data), software, and hardware for the express purpose of better understanding the world in which we live. Data are collected and managed within this system, and are ultimately used to question, analyze, and interpret patterns that occur throughout physical space. The interaction between different types of data reveals patterns and relationships that are not otherwise readily detectable. This course will provide students with the theoretical concepts necessary for advancement in the field of GIS, and further enhance their experience in a wide range of multidisciplinary endeavors. Note: This course requires students to install software on a Windows-based computer (Windows 7 or higher) in order to complete assigned course work.

1Alumni Graduated with No APUS-incurred Student Loan Debt As of December 31, 2020

Includes alumni who graduated with an associate, bachelor's, or master's degree from APUS. Student loan debt is defined as student loans and private education loans used for tuition, fees, living expenses, and book costs associated with courses taken at APUS. Many APUS students receive military tuition assistance and veterans education benefits, which are not student loan debt.

*Cost Per Credit Hour

To minimize out-of-pocket costs, U.S. active-duty servicemembers, their spouse/dependents, National Guard members, and Reservists receive a tuition grant that caps undergraduate, master's degree, and graduate certificate tuition at $250/credit hour. In addition, a university book grant provides no-cost textbooks and ebooks for all undergraduates and military-tuition-grant-eligible master’s-level students.
