About This Program

The undergraduate certificate in infant and toddler care at American Military University (AMU) offers training for the care of infants and toddlers through age 5.  

AMU’s program covers:

  • Infant and toddler development and disorders
  • Parenting
  • Family dynamics

This online certificate for infant and toddler care prepares you to plan and implement programs in group care settings and set up age-appropriate activities. You will practice formal and informal observation techniques.

Some courses may count toward the 120 clock hours required for the Council for Professional Recognition’s Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential.

NOTE: This program does not award professional licensure and does not qualify you to apply for teaching licensure. This program may be helpful in preparing to earn certain professional certifications.

What You Will Do

  1. Identify cognitive, physical, social, and emotional changes that occur in early childhood
  2. Explore the relationship between a child’s development and interactions with parents, siblings, peers, and teachers
  3. Examine the fundamentals of infant and toddler development, including planning and implementation of daycare programs
  4. Apply interpersonal, group, and presentation communication skills in personal and professional cross-cultural environments

This course focuses on theory and practical approaches to understanding and providing accommodations for students with special needs. Students will be presented with an overview of the characteristics of the most prevalent types of disabilities, as well as the laws that protect and best educational practices for children with disabilities. Students will examine the methods to teach, as well as the documents that provide the legal basis for meeting the needs for an appropriate education for this population.

Includes alumni who graduated with an associate, bachelor's, or master's degree from APUS. Student loan debt is defined as student loans and private education loans used for tuition, fees, living expenses, and book costs associated with courses taken at APUS. Many APUS students receive military tuition assistance and veterans education benefits, which are not student loan debt.

To minimize out-of-pocket costs, U.S. active-duty servicemembers, their spouse/dependents, National Guard members, and Reservists receive a tuition grant that caps undergraduate, master's degree, and graduate certificate tuition at $250/credit hour. In addition, a university book grant provides no-cost textbooks and ebooks for all undergraduates and military-tuition-grant-eligible master’s-level students.
