Learn About Liberty

MA in Homeland Security | School of Security & Global Studies

Liberty Simmons, a full‑time television reporter and U.S. Navy Reserve officer, was looking for an online program that could handle her demanding career and military commitments. Referred by a veteran friend, she chose AMU for its student-centered flexibility and affordability, along with its mission-aligned focus on national security.

At AMU, Liberty completed a capstone centered on fighting misinformation — a project that now shapes her day-to-day work in both public affairs and journalism. Her degree empowered her to deliver more accurate, trustworthy stories and messages to the public and service members alike.

How She Did it

Work & Learn

Liberty needed a university that would allow her to complete her coursework while working full-time as a broadcast journalist.

Focused & Flexible

AMU's online coursework fit around Liberty's schedule so she could stay focused on her dual roles as a journalist and a public affairs officer.

Leveraged Learning

The capstone project Liberty created during her master's program is something she applies to her journalism work and her Naval service daily.
"I was able to create a communication plan for my capstone focused on how we can combat misinformation. That research is what I use to support my work as a public affairs officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve, as well as in my journalism to tell stories accurately."
