Master of Education: M.Ed. (Non Licensure)

The Master of Education in Teaching: Non-Licensure Concentration in Elementary Education program is ideal if you wish to earn a master’s degree while studying the theory and practical applications of teaching K-6 students. This non-licensure master's program will not lead to eligibility for teaching certification, and is intended for those who do not have and/or are not seeking any teacher licensure.

This master’s program is aligned with West Virginia Professional Teaching Standards (WVPTS), national content standards for elementary education, and the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE).

Program Courses

The curriculum for this online master’s degree is reviewed by an advisory council of industry experts for relevancy to today’s marketplace. Course topics include:

  • Technology in the 21st century classroom
  • Theoretical and applied aspects of learning, motivation, and human development
  • Assessment and evaluation in the educational setting

  • Best practices of classroom management

Program Objectives

In addition to the institutional and degree level learning objectives, graduates of this program are expected to achieve these learning outcomes:

  • Apply the central concepts, tools of inquiry, structures, contemporary theories, and paradigms in education that develop a classroom climate to enhance the social, emotional, physical, and psychological aspects of students.
  • Create lesson segments that reflect theory and ractice.
  • Demonstrate effective interpersonal communication skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing when interacting with pupils, parents, teachers, and other school personnel.
  • Design performance-based assessments, instruction, evaluation, and intervention plans.
  • Use media and technology as tools for professional development and to promote student learning.
  • Adjust teaching style and strategies without influence of bias to meet the needs of students regardless of cultural background, ethnicity, gender, learning style, at-risk condition and/or disability.
  • Model professionalism and high ethical standards in the classroom and develop appropriate strategies for self-evaluation as a means of assessing one’s own professionalism and teaching effectiveness.
  • Follow guidelines established by school board policies, negotiated agreements, and school law.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skill in classroom management and discipline using effective means to develop and maintain a positive classroom climate.

Admission Requirements

All graduate programs require you to have earned a minimum of a bachelor’s degree from an institution whose accreditation is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

In addition, the following documentation is required for admission into this program, and must be provided prior to course registration:

  • Official bachelor’s or master’s transcript showing conferral of degree
  • School of Education non-certification questionnaire
  • Graduate writing sample
  • Signed statement of understanding (SOU) form

Important Notes:

  • This program is not designed to lead to certification or licensure. We strongly encourage you to explore your state-specific requirements prior to applying here in order to make an informed decision.   • As of November 1, 2014, a minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.5 is required for admission into this program.
  • You will need to complete 125 hours of field experience at an approved school site.
  • All program courses, including field experience, must be completed prior to entrance into the final capstone course.
  • Some course descriptions, syllabi, and assignments may focus on K-12 settings and may require observations and/or assignments to be completed with K-12 learners and/or educators. You will need to obtain access to suitable instructional settings for all required assignments and for the capstone course.
  • Any background check requirements, including fees, for the selected instructional setting(s) in which you will observe and be present are your responsibility.
  • The first course you need to take here is EDUC 502: Foundations of Curriculum and Instruction. Other courses may be taken in conjunction with the first course, but you must complete the first required course during your initial class term at our university.
