Is American Military University accredited?
Yes, American Military University is part of the American Public University System (APUS), which is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). The HLC accredits degree-granting institutions located in a 19-state region, and is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (ED), and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

In addition, some academic programs also have specialized accreditation.

How do I apply?
We have a short online application that you can submit to start the admission process. You’ll be asked to choose your academic program (major) when you complete the application form. It should take you less than 15 minutes to complete the form, and there is no fee to apply. When you’re ready to apply, just look for the Apply Now button on our website to get started.

What are your admission requirements?
The answer to this question depends upon your degree level (undergraduate or graduate level), but in general we have very few requirements. You won’t need to submit grades or SAT scores, but you will need to provide proof of a high school diploma (undergraduate) or earned bachelor’s degree (graduate). New undergraduate students may also be asked to complete our college readiness assessment.

When can I register? What courses should I take first?
After you submit your application, an admissions representative will walk you through the steps you need to get started. You can register for courses after you have been admitted to the university and your program.

If you’re a graduate student, you may register for your first course after proof of a conferred bachelor’s degree is received by American Military University. Selective programs may require additional documentation before registration is permitted.

Admitted undergraduate students should enroll in COLL100 as their first course. You should work with your admission representative if you wish to register for additional courses at the same time. Graduate students should take Research Methods or other required first course as determined by their program of study.

When do courses start?
Course start monthly on the first Monday of every month. You can register for a course as early as 5 months before it begins and up to 1 week before the course starts, but if you are using Federal Student Aid, you must declare an FSA academic year start date at least 21 days prior to registering for the first semester of each academic year.

How do I transfer my prior college credits?
To determine which of your previous academic credits transfer here, start your transfer credit evaluation once you log into the ecampus. Click the Transfer Credit link under Student Services to visit our Transfer Credit Evaluation Center.

As an undergraduate student with previous academic credits, you’ll need to provide American Military University with a previous college transcript and submit a transfer credit evaluation (TCE) application. The TCE takes 4-6 weeks to complete after we receive all of your documents.

How much does it cost to complete my degree here?
The total cost per program is shown on each of the program description pages and is based on completing all the credits required for the program. There is also a per-course technology fee, but in general, we have fewer fees than most public or private universities. View all tuition and fee rates.

What types of financing do you accept? What is your school code?
We accept direct payment in the form of credit cards or e-checks, as well as financing from public and private sources, including military tuition assistance (TA) and Federal Student Aid (FSA). If you seek financial aid, follow these tips to avoid delays:

  • Apply for financial aid at least one month before your class begins.
  • Check your email frequently and pay attention to deadlines.
  • Respond promptly when we ask for other documents, such as tax information or transcripts.

What do I do on the first day of class?
Courses begin at 6:00 a.m. ET on the first Monday of the month. Log into the ecampus and click on Enter Classes. Read and save your syllabus, and begin working on your first-week assignments.

To avoid being dropped from the class during your first week, remember to:

  • Log into your course at least once.
  • Submit a 250-word post to the class forum.

How many hours of study time should I expect per week?
The amount of time that you spend on your course each week varies, depending upon the course’s length and your degree level:

  • 8-week classes: 15-18 hours for undergraduates and 18-22 hours for graduates
  • 16-week classes: 9-10 hours for undergraduates and 10-15 hours for graduates
