Biography - James R Brinson

Jim Brinson has been an adjunct faculty member at AMU since 2007, and joined the university as a full-time faculty member in 2010. Prior to this, he was a full-time faculty member in the Department of Life and Physical Sciences at Ivy Tech State College, the Center for Science Education and the School of Graduate Studies at Indiana State University. He retains adjunct faculty status at both institutions. He has researched at the Indiana University School of Medicine and is a certified chemist and environmental scientist. Jim completed his undergraduate and graduate work at Indiana State University (Biology/Chemistry) and his post-graduate work at both the University of Nebraska (Molecular Biology) and the University of Maryland (Chemistry). He also holds graduate and post-graduate degrees from Trinity Theological Seminary (Biblical Studies/Science and Religion) and is currently serving in cross-cultural ministry in Europe.

Brinson previously worked in the field of pollination genetics and plant breeding for Pioneer Hi-Bred International (a DuPont company), and he is also a former high school biology/chemistry teacher and baseball coach. He is a strong and active advocate for science and health education, and his students have ranged in age from early elementary to senior citizens.

Brinson’s scientific research interests lie in biological chemistry, especially the anthropological effects on the chemistry and ecology of freshwater ecosystems. His philosophical research interests lie in the convergence of contemporary scientific paradigms with religious philosophy, especially that of Christianity. He has a vested interest in online learning, and has taken on the challenge of developing science curriculum for various institutions to be delivered in an online format while still retaining the basic tenets of inquiry-based learning.

Most importantly, Brinson is married with 3 children, is active in his church with worship ministry, and enjoys playing the guitar, bass, banjo, and mandolin.
