In this course, students will learn the basics of retail management functions, principles and techniques found in today's marketplace. Students will also explore the ideal characteristics and responsibilities of an effective department or store manager, ranging from legal and safety scenarios to understanding the role and importance of logistics in various retail establishments. In this class, students will focus on the individual as a contributor, their roles and responsibilities in retail management and operations, and its varied sizes and types.

This course introduces students to the basics of customer relations functions and describes the ideal characteristics of good customer relations in both small and large retail organizations. This class will also discuss effective customer relations strategies, effective listening, oral and written communication, analytical and problem-solving skills, and teamwork based on the organization's commitment to meeting customer needs while making customers feel welcome and valued. Students will also learn the methods and approaches to addressing problems, including the management of conflicts when they occur.

This class in retail inventory management will present the significant factors in managing a business’ profits at a steady margin and reducing theft and loss of inventory. Students will learn to distinguish between large and small retail organizations and become familiar with variations in inventory management based upon the nature of the inventory (such as perishable, seasonal, and fashion). The course will also review the skills, tools, and resources required for effective inventory management, as well as the strategies for keeping inventory current and various ways to identify and mitigate inventory management challenges.
