SOCI215 - Social Deviance

Course Details

Course Code: SOCI215 Course ID: 3740 Credit Hours: 3 Level: Undergraduate

This course is a critical examination of the relationship between deviance and social control. It will include how and why certain forms of behavior come to be known as deviant, it will analyze the nature of formal and informal responses to deviance, and explain the interaction of different social control institutions. Special attention will be given to an overview of general theories of deviance, and the particular forms it takes.

Current Syllabi

CO1.Define deviance as well as discuss it from a social standing.
CO2.Examine theories of deviance.
CO3.Identify trends in deviance as it has changed through the past few decades.
CO4.Explain why norms change so drastically, thus deviant behavior may become the norm.
CO5.Examine pros and cons of learning about deviant behavior for an undergraduate degree.
CO6.Apply course concepts to support opinions about deviance.
