This course provides a detailed history of protective services. Topics covered include training and background requirements, obtaining contracts, selecting, training, and managing a security team, security surveys, dealing with clients, legal issues, importance of networking, information sources, and special considerations for clients in high profile industries.

After successfully completing this course, you will be able to

CO-1: Develop a proper risk analysis and threat assessment.

CO-2: Validate the ability to "work the principal."

CO-4: Prepare a comprehensive home and office security plan.

CO-5: Validate effective security measures while traveling.

Forum Assignments:

There is one Introduction- Week 1 forum (post to forum only – ungraded but mandatory; 250 words minimum). six Forum assignments (750 words minimum), and 12 Forum replies to fellow students (250 words minimum) during the course. Each will count as either 5% or 10% of the final grade (see below). The forum assignments reinforce major elements of the course (Protective Services). These forums address relevant protective services questions and operational dilemmas from the text and provided supplementary resources. They are selected to provide the student with hands-on experience in applying the techniques and models discussed. Forum responses should be prepared in Microsoft Word or a compatible word processing program uploaded into the classroom as per the instructions in “Announcements” by the due date.


There are two quizzes, each of which comprises 10% of the final grade. Quizzes are not timed however they are set for one time access only. The quizzes cover selected sections of the textbook(s). Each may include a variety of examination question types such as fill-in-the-blank, yes/no, multiple choice, true/false, and essay. Please coordinate with the professor for any special arrangements.

The Final Examination is not timed and set for one time access. It is an open-book examination. It comprises 20% of the final grade. This examination covers selected sections of the textbook(s). It includes a variety of essay questions. Please coordinate with the professor for any special arrangements.

Research Paper:

Each student prepares and submits research paper as discussed in detail below. It comprises 20% of the final grade. Write a twelve-page (minimum) paper (exclusive of title page and reference list) based on (one only) of the provided scenarios.
