NURS400 - Emerging Scholarship and Trends in Healthcare

Course Code: NURS400 Course ID: 4207 Credit Hours: 3 Level: Undergraduate

This course is only open to students who are enrolled in the RN to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN to BSN) program. Students explore the rapid evolution of current nursing practice and examine historical and contemporary issues germane to their practice. Students examine changes in technology and its impact on access, cost, quality, and knowledge development. Global health and nursing workforce issues are evaluated and discussed.

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Evaluate the impact of technology changes on access, cost, and quality of care (PO 4, PO 7)
  2. Explain the impact of the Institute of Medicine’s 2011 Report entitled, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health on the nursing profession and delivery of healthcare (PO 2, PO 9)
  3. Evaluate current and emerging trends in healthcare delivery and their impact on patient health and nursing practice (PO 4, PO 7, PO 8)
  4. Assess global health issues and nursing’s role in promoting health in the global community (PO 3, PO 7)
  5. Evaluate the growth of nursing research over time and the impact of this history on current practice (PO 3)
  6. Evaluate legislative processes and healthcare policies in the United States and their impact on the nursing profession (PO 7)
  7. Analyze the effect of current nursing workforce on the delivery of high-quality patient-centered care. (PO 1, PO 3)

Reading Assignments: This course requires a time management plan and the self-discipline to follow it. You are responsible for managing your time, completing assignments on time, completing the readings, and making inquiries as needed to complete the course effectively. This is an eight-week course, which means the material must be learned in a short period of time. This requires dedication and diligence on the part of each student.

Reading assignments will be graded through evaluation of Forum responses and exams.

Forum Assignments:

Introductory Forum

Your introductory Forum is considered by the university to be your official entry into the classroom. You must participate in this Forum by midnight, Eastern Time on Sunday of the first week of class. Your initial response must be a minimum of 250 words. Read below for more information about other Forum assignments in this course.

The interaction that takes place within the Forum is an essential component of this course. Each week, you will be required to interact in asynchronous mode with your fellow students. Each week’s Forum contains a question that is relevant to the content for the week. The questions posed in the Forum will encourage you to think more deeply about the weekly lesson content. Your initial posting each week should be at least 250 words. Your responses to your classmates should be at least 150 words in length and meaningful and contribute to the overall growth of knowledge about the topic under discussion. The rubric by which each Forum posting will be graded is in the “Getting Started” Lesson within the classroom.

For your Forum assignment each week you will be responsible for the following:

  1. Research and respond to the question that is posted. Your post should be substantive and relevant to the question that is posed.
  2. Respond to at least two of your classmates. If the class size is small, this required number may be changed at the discretion of your instructor. Your responses to your classmates(s) constitute a significant portion of your Forum grade, so be sure that they are meaningful responses that contribute to the overall quality of the weekly discussion and encourage “out of the box” thinking. Just saying “I agree….” is not acceptable.
  3. If you cite any resources in the course of preparing your response, you need to reference them at the end of your post, just as you would in a paper.
  4. Since the discussion is asynchronous, you are not required to be online at a specific time with either the professor or your classmates. However, as you can see, it will be difficult for your classmates to respond in a timely manner above if you do not post your initial response early. Therefore, with the exception of Week 1, the initial posting in each week’s Forum is due by Thursday of that week. The Forum rubric includes point deductions for late submission of both your initial post and your responses. If you have questions or need additional guidance, you should email me at the college email address and I will get back to you with an answer.

Exams/Quizzes

There will be two essay exams in this course, a mid-term review and a final. The Mid-term review covers material from Weeks 1-4, the End-term review covers Weeks 5-8.

Group Project and Presentation

For the Group Project, the group will select and research one of criteria in the O’Neil’s article (O'Neil, Edward H. (2011) Through a Glass Darkly: Reflections on Change in Health Care, Nursing, and Blue Ribbon Committees Journal of Nursing Education 50. 6 -See Week 2) area where he believes that nurses need to take leadership. The group will have 4 weeks to complete the project, which will be presented during Week 6. The members of each group will:

  • Research the historical and current state of nursing involvement in their identified area of interest,
  • Look at future trends,
  • Consider evidence-based research that provides information on actual or anticipated outcomes related to nursing’s involvement in these areas of practice, and
  • Consider other members of the healthcare team and how collaboration might improve outcomes as well.
  • As a group, create a presentation (poster, PPT, etc.) of your findings findings.
  • Complete a self evaluation and a peer evaluation for each of the members of your group and submit.

Final Paper (due the end of Week 7)

An important component of this course is the research paper. The paper can be on a topic of your choice, but it must relate directly to the course material. You must use at least four academic bibliographic sources (paper or online) in addition to the required course readings. Wikepedia.com is not an acceptable academic reference at this university.

The paper should be between 8 and 12 pages in length, not including the title page and reference list.

  • The research paper should include an introduction of the topic, a body in which the topic is developed and references correctly cited in APA format, and a well-defined conclusion. For more information on how the essay exam questions and the research paper will be graded, see “Grading” below.

  • I strongly suggest that, as part of your research, you take advantage of the university’s online library link. There is a wide variety of resources there including many full-text papers and articles. This may be of particular advantage to any of you who are deployed and do not have traditional library resources available to you.

  • I also recommend that you contact me with the topic of your paper before you begin your research. The topic you choose may be too broad or too narrow, and a discussion may help you to focus so that your learning will be maximized and your paper will be the best it can be.

  • You must submit your final papers through Turnitin.com. This is a site that checks for plagiarism, as well as providing resources to assist you in preparing your paper. Be careful in your gathering of resources for your paper and do not copy directly from your sources! Your paper is due at the end of Week 7 of class.

  • As is clearly stated in the Student Handbook, you must submit an original paper for each course that you take at APU/AMU. It is not acceptable to use the same paper for more than one class. You can use the same topic and change the focus if you like, but your work must be original to this course. Be assured that Turnitin.com will let me know if you copy too much of a previous work!

  • Often, students submit papers with grammatical errors that are not picked up with Spell Check. One technique that might work for you is to read your paper aloud, to yourself or someone else, before you submit it. Often reading it aloud and seeing the words on the paper simultaneously will help you to pick up these grammatical errors that ultimately will cost you grading points.

  • Research papers will be graded using the Writing assignment grading rubric, found in the classroom.

All exams and assignments are due by midnight Eastern Time of the appropriate week. A 10% per day penalty will be assessed for late submission.

Assignment and Coursework Grading Policy

Students are expected to submit classroom assignments by the designated due date and to complete the course according to the published class schedule. Failure to submit coursework by the designated due date will result in a 10 percent (10%) penalty per day until three (3) days after the coursework is due. Therefore, after three (3) days the maximum grade the student can achieve with a late submission will be a grade of 70% (“C-”). If a student is ill, has a family crisis, or will miss scheduled coursework deadlines for any reason, the student shall notify the instructor in advance if at all possible.

Course Completion and Progression Requirements

Effective September 1st 2015 (For all students who started in NURS300 after September 1, 2015 and beyond) In order to pass the course and progress in the nursing program, students must complete all assigned coursework and achieve a final course grade of a 73% (“C”) or better. In the capstone course NURS498: Senior Seminar in Nursing Studies, students must complete all assigned coursework and achieve a final course grade of an 84% (“B”) or better in order to pass the course and graduate from the nursing program. If assignments are not completed by the end of the course, the student will receive an F in the course unless prior arrangements have been made for a course extension. If prior arrangements have been made for a course extension, the student will receive an “Incomplete” (I) and must complete the course requirements according to the University course extension policy.
