Course Code: LSTD601 Course ID: 2767 Credit Hours: 3 Level: Graduate

This course is an introduction to sports-related legal issues and concepts. Its focus is on providing an overview of the major legal issues associated with sports, sports management, and the sports industry. Students will conduct research, read, and write on issues associated with the sports legal industry. Topics include but are not limited to discrimination, legislation, regulation and rights, competition, contract, labor, tort and trademark law, and administrative, antitrust and constitutional law.

Current Syllabi

Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able meet the following learning objectives:

  • Analyze current issues in the business of sports
  • Compare and contrast the roles of various sports commissioners
  • Recognize and discuss the elements of contract law in the sports field in terms of contract formation, termination, validation, avoidance, and performance.
  • Evaluate and examine sports contract negotiations, formation, enforcement, and interpretation.
  • Distinguish and discuss the impact of antitrust law on sports in sports in general, baseball exemption, labor exemption, player restrains, monopolization and restraints on Inter-League competition, and equipment restrictions.
  • Recognize and discuss labor law and sports in relationship to labor disputes, unfair labor practices, representation, and arbitration.
  • Examine the issues involved in discrimination in sports.
  • Analyze current issues in sports law in the areas of tort law and intellectual property.
  • Evaluate the role and function of the player/agent and sports.

FORUM PARTICIPATION:

You will find them in the Forums tab of the classroom. Initial posts must be in by Thursday each week. Classmate responses are due Sunday each week. Forum assignments will be based on the readings and your research.

Replies should be substantive. Comments like "I agree," or "Good job," are not substantive. Some things you could do to meet this requirement are: read a little of their research and comment on it; compare their research to yours; give examples if you agree with them, or counter examples if you don't; or share some of your experiences or issues you have seen that the rest of us probably won't be familiar with or have experienced.

ASSIGNMENTS

There will be formal written assignments due in the Assignments tab. The assignment instructions are in the Assignments tab in the classroom. Students are expected to complete each assignment by the due date. All written submissions should follow the format and rubric requirements posted in the Assignments tab. Please note the due date of the assignments, as they are subject to change at the discretion of your instructor.

MIDTERM AND FINAL EXAMINATIONS:

The class contains a Midterm and Final examination. Both exams will be open book and will be posted in the classroom during the week in which they are due under the Tests & Quizzes tab.
