A detailed study of the history, theories, and practices of global development initiatives with particular concentration in the prevailing views and practices of the 1960’s-contemporary times. A look at development in light of broader political constructs that influence the development of nations.

Current Syllabi

After successfully completing this course, you will be able to:

CO-1 Explain the historical circumstances that gave rise to contemporary patterns of development.

CO-2 Examine the correlation between political, economic and/or social issues in international development.

CO-3 Apply dominant theories in development to a current event.

CO-4 Describe environmental issues in development.

CO-5 Critique development at the state and regional levels.

Forum discussions – 25 percent

Each week, a discussion question is provided and posts should reflect an assimilation of the readings. Students are required to provide a substantive initial post by Thursday at 11:55 pm ET and respond to more than 2 classmates by Sunday 11:55 pm ET. Forum posts are graded on timeliness, relevance, knowledge of the weekly readings, and the quality of original ideas.

Midterm assignment - 20 percent

This assignment consists of complete a chart and writing a paragraph reflecting on how the topics from the first three weeks of class interrelate.

Progress assignment - 30 percent

Specialized Exercise - Simulation. 4 pages including research and analysis.

Final assignment – 25 percent

This assignment is to write white paper. Please see instructions for the assignment for more information.
