HIMA499 - Senior Seminar in Health Information Management

Course Code: HIMA499 Course ID: 4763 Credit Hours: 3 Level: Undergraduate

This seminar is a senior level course designed to allow the student to review, analyze, and integrate the work the student has completed toward a degree in health information management. The student will complete an approved academic project or paper that demonstrates mastery of their program of study in a meaningful culmination of their learning, as well as assess their level of mastery of the stated outcomes of their degree requirements. (Prerequisite: Students may only take this course after the completion of all CORE courses)

Current Syllabi

After successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
1. Communicate effectively and persuasively orally and in writing.
2. Discuss major practical and theoretical HIM principles and their advantages and limitations.
3. Apply economic, legal, and ethical doctrines to health information management issues.
4. Demonstrate proficiency in online research.
5. Explain HIM applications and medical terminology accurately.
6. Synthesize the knowledge gained during the course of study in the health information management program in a comprehensive final project.

Please join the forums each week. Replies must be posted in the week due and replies after the end of each week will not be graded. The Forums are for student’s interaction and input and should be submitted before the week ends in order to fully participate in the discussions. Students should demonstrate their own knowledge in the forums and avoid copying and pasting from websites.


• Post the initial response to each forum by 11:55pm, ET, Thursday.
• Initial responses should be no less than 300 words.
• Initial responses are to be original in content and demonstrate a thorough analysis of the topic.
• Reply to at least 2 of your classmates in each forum by 11:55pm, ET, Sunday.
• Replies to classmates should be no less than 200 words.
• Responses to classmates are significant to advance the forum.
• All forums can be accessed in the Forums section of the course.
