About This Program

American Military University’s (AMU) graduate certificate in K-6 STEAM (STEM + the Arts) focuses on instructional development integrating the visual and performing arts with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

It is designed for those who wish to be a STEAM teacher. This online program helps educators guide learners toward becoming innovative, creative thinkers. You will be prepared to develop interdisciplinary curriculum and lesson plans for face-to-face, virtual, and hybrid formal and informal settings. Program features include:

  • Strong technology integration
  • Interdisciplinary coursework
  • Exposure to humane education and space studies

This is a nonlicensure K-6 education program suitable for licensed K-6 teachers, as well as park, afterschool, community, camp, and homeschool program instructors.

NOTE: This program has specific admission requirements. It does not award professional licensure and does not qualify you to apply for teaching licensure. This program may be helpful in preparing to earn certain professional certifications. The program is not eligible for federal student aid.

What You Will Do

  1. Apply STEM/STEAM theory, research, and evidence-based practices in K-6 school or community settings
  2. Devise ways to use global and local resources and experts in STEAM areas to support K-6 students’ learning

This course emphasizes the objectives, methods, instruction, and integration of elementary school mathematics and science through a STEAM (STEM + the Arts) lens. Educators will examine research related to elementary school mathematics and science instruction with an emphasis on innovative programs and approaches. Activities include analyzing and evaluating educational trends, curricular materials, and techniques related to teaching mathematics and science to elementary school children. Additional topics include brain-based learning, technology integration, thematic/integrated instruction, and quality children’s literature as enhancements to facilitate children’s understanding of math and science/STEAM concepts and skills. (Prerequisite: EDUC503)

In this course candidates will develop an understanding of the structure of the different types of software/genres (e. g. application, drill and practice, tutorial and simulation), and their effect on raising student achievement. Candidates will gain an appreciation for the types of online learning experiences that will enhance the online student experience. Scholarly literature that addresses student achievement gains via technology will be examined. Candidates will be introduced to a typology for software and interactive web experiences that predict the effect of student achievement based on the unique features of interactive product. (Candidates in the M. Ed. Teaching-Concentration in Secondary Social Studies program must take the 16-week course version per the West Virginia Board of Education-no exceptions.)

This course explores how technology may be used as a tool to facilitate changes in the ways teachers teach and students learn, and ultimately to examine how teachers can use technology more efficiently and effectively to improve student achievement. The course also examines how educators can increase their productivity by using technology for communication and collaboration among colleagues, staff, parents, students, and the larger community. This course addresses the National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers (NETS•T), developed by the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE). (Prerequisite: EDUC503)

This course serves as an introduction to the APUS Space Studies Master’s program. It describes on the main concentrations in Space Studies: Astronomy, Aerospace Science, Space Policy, and Space Entrepreneurship. It also focuses on the technical writing proficiency expectation for graduate study and the importance of the peer review process in scientific literature. The course explores both current and future directions in NASA space exploration. It also introduces the new United States Space Force (USSF), and considers the implications of the USSF for the direction of our country’s space exploration policy.

The course is designed to introduce elementary teacher candidates to the application of visual and performing arts content across the areas of mathematics, science, language/literature, and history/social sciences, including current events and humane topics. Admission Requirements

All AMU master's degree and graduate programs require a bachelor’s degree (or higher) from an institution whose accreditation is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

In addition, the following is required for admission into this program. All documentation must be provided prior to course registration:

  • A minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale, or a master’s transcript showing conferral of a degree.
  • Graduate writing sample.
  • School of Education Non-Certification Questionnaire.
  • Statement of Understanding (SOU).

Please read all graduate admission requirements before applying to this program and be prepared to submit the required documentation including a legible copy of your valid government-issued photo ID (civilian students) or government issued JST or CCAF transcript (military students).

IMPORTANT NOTES

You are required to take EDUC671 as the first course in this degree program, but other courses may be taken in conjunction with EDUC671. It is recommended that you take EDUC549 as the last course in this program, but other courses may be taken concurrently.

This program does not lead to state certification or licensure, nor can it be used to maintain state licensure or certification. We strongly encourage you to explore your state-specific requirements prior to applying here in order to make an informed decision. In addition, you may email our coordinator of certification and licensure at certification@apus.edu.

Includes alumni who graduated with an associate, bachelor's, or master's degree from APUS. Student loan debt is defined as student loans and private education loans used for tuition, fees, living expenses, and book costs associated with courses taken at APUS. Many APUS students receive military tuition assistance and veterans education benefits, which are not student loan debt.

To minimize out-of-pocket costs, U.S. active-duty servicemembers, their spouse/dependents, National Guard members, and Reservists receive a tuition grant that caps undergraduate, master's degree, and graduate certificate tuition at $250/credit hour. In addition, a university book grant provides no-cost textbooks and ebooks for all undergraduates and military-tuition-grant-eligible master’s-level students.
