This graduate degree has recently been designed to allow students to choose an area of concentration in a field of study that best suits their professional aspirations and interests. This program ensures that students will learn about the "big picture" through exposure to strategic and operational perspectives, while allowing students to tailor graduate study to individual needs. The major ensures that you will learn about the "big picture" through exposure to six historical perspectives or concentrations in Air Warfare, Land Warfare, Naval Warfare, Joint Warfare, Asymmetrical Warfare, and Strategic Leadership. Graduates of this program typically go on to serve in government or military occupations, write articles and/or books, and/or pursue the doctorate in a related field.

Faculty Spotlight
Dr. Jon Carleton
Program Director
EdD: George Washington University

Jon Carleton is the Department Chair for the Department of History and Military Studies, American Public University System, Graduate Programs and Certificates.
His undergraduate degree is in American Social History (University of Wisconsin, 1968) and his graduate work is in Curriculum and Instruction with majors in History and Sociology (University of Wisconsin, 1971). In 1971, he was commissioned in the US Air Force where he spent 24 years in the Education and Training field and Joint Operational Planning environment. In addition to attending USAF service schools, he was a chair and faculty member at the Armed (Joint) Forces Staff College from 1989 to 1993. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.
He completed doctoral work in Higher Education at George Washington University, and subsequently worked as an educational administrator with Saint Leo University and Central Michigan University. His teaching background includes undergraduate courses in American social and cultural history and graduate courses in joint strategic planning and military campaigns.
