Master of Arts in Intelligence Studies

The Master of Arts in Intelligence Studies provides professional, graduate-level academic education in the interdisciplinary field of intelligence studies. The program's core courses impart substantive knowledge and analytic skills required by all professionals in the intelligence community. Students may also pursue concentrated study in functional areas or intelligence sub-fields. Student learning is greatly enhanced by the diversity of program professors with strong professional and academic backgrounds in intelligence studies, many who currently work in the U.S. Intelligence Community.

Faculty Spotlight

Elena Mastors
Program Director
Doctor of Philosophy: Washington State University

Dr. Elena Mastors is currently the Program Director for Graduate Intelligence and National Security Studies at American Military University. She is also a research professor at the Institute of Intercommunal Conflict at Washington State University. Previous to her position at AMU, she was an Associate Professor in the National Decision Making Department at the Naval War College, and also held various senior intelligence and policy positions in the office of Undersecretary of Defense for Intelligence and the Defense Intelligence Agency.

Dr. Mastors is an expert on political psychology as it pertains to conflict, terrorism and political leadership. She writes frequently on understanding leaders and group dynamics from a political-psychological perspective. Dr. Mastors has published on the subjects of conflict and armed groups. Her most recent books include Introduction to Political Psychology, The Lesser Jihad: Recruits and the al-Qaida Network and Breaking al-Qaeda.
