The Global Maritime and Transportation School (GMATS) at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and American Military University (AMU) have established a partnership in education for transfer credit, enabling students to apply their completed GMATS maritime coursework towards an AMU online degree program.
AMU is committed to helping students combine the unique on-campus resources of the GMATS with affordable, convenient, and respected online degree programs offered through AMU.

Associate of Arts Degrees at AMU
28 total credits will be accepted for transfer credit from the Crew Advancement Program and the Engineering Crew Advancement Program toward the AMU Associate of Arts in General Studies.
24 semester hours will be applied to fulfill all of the elective credit requirements in the AMU Associate of Arts program. Additionally students will be granted three semester hours to fulfill the national science general education requirement and one semester hour to fulfill the natural science laboratory requirement.
Bachelor of Arts Degrees at AMU
Coursework from GMATS will be accepted for transfer credit into the AMU bachelor's degree, as follows:
- For the Crew Advancement Program, AMU will accept four semester hours of general education science courses and up to 45 semester hours of electives.
- For the Engineering Crew Advancement Program, AMU will accept 16 semester hours of electives for completion of Phase I and then four semester hours of general education science courses and up to 20 semester hours of electives for completion of Phase II.
Completion of the Bachelor’s program generally requires approximately 121 hours, inclusive of your course work at GMATS.
