AMU Faculty Member: John T Ackerman


Dr. Ackerman is an Adjunct Professor of International Relations at American Public University Systems (APUS) and at Ashford University. At APUS he has taught a variety of online graduate and undergraduate courses to include the following: International Relations (I and II), International Organizations, International Political Economy, International Political Systems, Politics and War, and Foundations of Peace. At Ashford University Dr. Ackerman has taught Military Ethics and International Relations graduate level courses.
In addition, Dr. Ackerman is an independent courseware developer contractor employed by two for-profit universities. He is currently developing both homeland security courses and national security/international relations courses. Each course is between eight and ten weeks long and contains either undergraduate or graduate level instructional objectives and course material.
Dr. Ackerman was an Associate Professor of National and International Security Studies at the Air Command and Staff College (ACSC), Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama from 2007-2011. He led course development and execution of the National/International Security Studies Course for the ACSC Department of Distance Learning (DL). Prior to his appointment as Course Director, Dr. Ackerman was the Director of Conferences and Publications and the Deputy Chairman of the Department of International and National Security Studies at ACSC. Dr. Ackerman is also a retired Lieutenant Colonel from the United States Air Force and held leadership assignments in Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) Operations and Training and taught both company grade and field grade officers’ professional military education courses.
Dr. Ackerman holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Alabama, Master’s Degrees in Political Science, Military Operational Art and Science, and Information Systems Management, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology. His professional interests include national and international security issues. His research efforts have included exploration into the relationships between sustainability and security, the international relations implications of energy insecurity, and the national security ramifications of strategic future trends. Dr. Ackerman has taught and developed undergraduate and graduate courses in national security studies, international relations, leadership and command, strategy and war, culture and warfare, air power history, joint military operations, and future global trends. He is currently investigating the relationship between international conflict and biodiversity.
