Master of Education Program Admissions Requirements

The School of Education offers master's level programs that lead to certification in the state of West Virginia in the following areas: Administration and Supervision, Guidance and Counseling, Elementary Education, and Secondary Social Studies. We also offer a Post Baccalaureate teacher preparation certification program designed for students with a bachelor's degree in areas such as English, mathematics, science, or social studies/history who desire to teach in today's grade 5 -12 classrooms. These programs offer both online courses and expertly supervised site-based instruction and training.

• Only applicants residing in West Virginia, Virginia, Ohio, Maryland, New Jersey, Texas, Florida, and South Carolina are eligible to enroll in School of Education programs that lead to teacher certification (M.Ed Teaching Elementary Education, M.Ed Teaching Secondary Social Studies and the Post-baccalaureate teacher preparation program) We regret any inconvenience this may cause and encourage you to revisit frequently for updates on this policy.
• Students must be U.S. citizens to hold a teaching certificate in West Virginia, however international students may apply for a West Virginia teaching permit which is renewable. Students located in Kentucky and Tennessee are advised not to apply to our School of Education at this time, due to state policies regarding online educator programs. Additionally, students seeking administrator certification who reside in Arkansas or Georgia will have additional coursework requirements which must be completed through a local college or institution approved by the state department of education. In order to complete a WV State approved program that may lead to teacher certification, ALL students must complete content area requirements prior to their culminating clinical experience (student teaching). 

Content area requirements typically encompass 30 – 48 hours in a single discipline. For Elementary Education teacher certification, a liberal arts background encompassing specific coursework requirements in English (both writing and literature), history (both West Virginia (or other state history) and American), two introductory sciences courses (with lab), wellness/health/PE, humanities (art or music) and  9 credit hours of mathematics (at or beyond Algebra I) will meet content area requirements. Official transcripts will be reviewed for content area requirements and the student will be advised regarding any deficits. All deficit content area coursework must be completed prior to entrance into student teaching.

The Admissions office in conjunction with the School of Education will complete a complimentary review of your transcripts to help determine whether you meet content area requirements.

The School of Education also offers Masters level programs that do not lead to certification in the following areas: Curriculum and Instruction for Elementary Teachers, Instructional Leadership, Elementary Reading, Special Education, English Language Learners and Online Learning. These programs are intended to provide individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in a variety of instructional settings with an emphasis on the K-12 environment.

Students are required to submit an official copy of their Bachelor's degree transcript from a nationally or regionally accredited institution.
