Emergency Management Executive Leadership

Graduate Certificate

The graduate certificate in Emergency Management Executive Leadership provides you with the core knowledge needed to serve as an executive or leader in an emergency management program in your corporation, organization or community. It is designed to improve your knowledge of crisis management, local to national agency coordination, risk assessment, crisis planning, disaster response, and disaster recovery. With continual awareness on the need to assure sustainability in crisis situations, along with increasing regulatory requirements on businesses to develop emergency management programs, there is growing need to prepare professionals in all walks of industry to effectively lead and manage crisis and disaster response programs. This online certificate is intended for graduate students who want to expand their knowledge of emergency management leadership without committing to a degree program.

The curriculum for this online graduate certificate is reviewed by an advisory council of industry experts for relevancy to today’s marketplace. Course topics include:

  • Emergency management preparation, response, and recovery operations
  • Management structure of public and private emergency management organizations
  • Leadership skills for public organizations
  • Interactions between federal, state, and local agencies
  • Effective communication methods and responses
  • Emergency management hazards, planning, and mitigation
  • Economics associated with international, national, state, or local disasters

Program Objectives

In addition to the institutional and degree level learning objectives, graduates of this program are expected to achieve these learning outcomes:

  • Understand the role of law in planning for disaster operations.
  • Evaluate public law, regulation, and associated policy that are relevant to emergency planning, response and recovery operations.
  • Discuss and interpret the interaction, coordination, and facilitation between federal, state, and local agencies during preparation, response, and recovery operations.
  • Discuss the history of emergency response organizational to include the impact of the National Response Framework (NRF) and the National Incident Management System (NIMS) on emergency operations.
  • Evaluate the potential for public-private partnerships in disaster response.
  • Apply hazard identification and risk reduction techniques to identify threats to community/corporate resilience.
  • Analyze and conduct research on the direct and indirect economic losses in public and private sectors that are associated with a disaster.
  • Understand the theoretical and practical public management concepts.
  • Apply public management theories to public management to emergency program management.

School of Security & Global Studies

This program resides in the American Military University School of Security & Global Studies where many of the university’s flagship programs were created by experts from the Departments of State, Defense, and Homeland Security, the intelligence community, and private businesses throughout the world. The programs taught in the School of Security & Global Studies truly embody our Educating Those Who Serve motto because many of our students come from active-duty military and federal, state, and local government agencies.

The AMU faculty is committed to helping you apply educational theories to real-world challenges in preparation for leadership opportunities in criminal justice, public safety, public administration, national security, and more. Many of our professors are highly credentialed and respected leaders in their fields and currently work in the U.S. government.

At AMU, we understand your need for flexibility because most of our students are working adult learners who balance school around work and service commitments. This is why we offer 8-week or 16-week online courses that start monthly. Through an online virtual classroom, you’ll communicate with classmates and professors in forum communities as you work to complete your weekly assignments on your own schedule from anywhere in the world. And with our mobile application, you can work offline and upload your assignments when you reconnect – a strong benefit for deployed personnel.
