The Spanish language and culture have become a part of who I am today. I grew up in Northern California and attended both undergraduate and graduate school at the University of Oregon, during which time I was able to study abroad in Sevilla, Barcelona, and Granada, Spain. I have worked in Costa Rica interpreting for ecological awareness tours and rain forest studies with Indigenous people. My first four years in the profession were spent teaching at Johnson County Community College and the University of Kansas. Since then our family has moved to Australia, California, and back to Missouri during which time I continued to teach online for American Public University. Currently I also teach, again, at Johnson County Community college and do contract projects with local businesses and private Spanish lessons.
My goal as a Professor of Spanish is to facilitate in students' learning experience and to encourage everyone in my classes to discover the incredible personal benefits that come with being able to interact with other cultures and experience their foods, customs, and language. I know many of the APU students already travel, so perhaps one day they will be well prepared to land in a Spanish-speaking area that will provide them a meaningful way to apply what they learn in the APU Spanish courses.
Gracias.
