
Irvin Varkonyi has three decades of experience in the transportation and logistics industry. He is Marketing Manager for Transportation and Logistics Programs at the American Public University where he is also an adjunct professor teaching transportation security, global logistics, comparative transportation systems, and business logistics engineering. He also holds adjunct professor positions at George Mason University’s School of Public Policy and the University of Denver.
In the post 9/11 period, Mr. Varkonyi created Supply Chain Operations Preparedness Education (SCOPE), a consulting firm focused on developing preparedness and resiliency planning for commercial and public sector enterprises. In this transition from his role as a practitioner with commercial carriers to a consultant, he frequently spoke on transportation security at conferences including ASIS, the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals, APICS and others. Mr. Varkonyi has written for industry publications such as the Journal of Commerce, Cargo Security International and CSCMP Focus. He was actively involved with the Heritage Foundation on their DHS 2.0 project used by Sec Michael Chertoff at the Dept of Homeland Security.
Mr. Varkonyi’s corporate experience includes APICS, the Association for Operations Management as their Manager for Instructor Development; the DDD Company, a fulfillment and distribution third party logistics provider; Emery Worldwide, where he served as Manager, Government Project Development at their Dulles Airport Government Sales Office; Martinair Holland, as Vice President, Cargo Sales, the Americas, where he oversaw cargo operations in the Americas for the niche operator based in the Netherlands; and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines.
Mr. Varkonyi holds an MBA from the American Graduate School of International Management (Thunderbird) in Glendale, AZ and a B.A. in International Relations and Economics from Clark University in Worcester, Mass. He the current chapter President of the DC Metro Chapter of APICS, past president of the National Capital Area Roundtable of the Council of Supply Chain Management and Chair of the Emergency Preparedness Committee of the Washington, DC Chapter of the National Defense Transportation Association.
