Welcome to this class. As a career government employee, I have over 30 years of government service, including over 20 years in the intelligence community. This background, along with my lifelong fascination with history, military strategy, geopolitics, and intelligence enabled me to achieve a long-held personal goal of teaching at the college level.
After beginning my career as a civilian electrical engineer with the US Navy, I moved on to modeling and simulation of foreign platforms and weapons systems in support of US naval capabilities. I spent ten years at the Defense Intelligence Agency working on all-source senior intelligence analysis and reporting in the areas of advanced telecommunications technologies, information warfare, national and foreign critical infrastructures, computer network operations, modeling and simulation, and foreign naval platforms and weapons. I spent two years with Naval Intelligence and seven years with the National Security Agency working on advanced technologies, information operations, and computer network operations. I returned to the Defense Intelligence Agency as a senior intelligence officer overseeing the production of advanced communications technologies.
My major career achievements include the Intelligence Community Officer Designation (2002), the US Navy Civilian Meritorious Service Award and Medal (2002), and the National Y2K Medal (2000). My education includes an M.S. in Strategic Intelligence from the Joint Military Intelligence College (1996) (now the National Defense Intelligence College), graduation from the Naval War College (1989), and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Tech (1980).
My professional accomplishments include numerous publications and additional awards. My hobbies include reading military history, genealogy, scuba diving, and amateur radio. I'm married (25 years) with four children and live in Annapolis, MD.
