Biography - John D Becker

1. Degrees: B.A., Political Science, California State College (now University), Stanislaus, M.A., International Relations, Boston University, M.A., Philosophy, Emory University, J.D., Law, University of Denver, LL.M., Environmental and Natural Resources Law and Policy, University of Denver Ph.D., International Studies, University of Denver (Dissertation: All Necessary Measures, All Necessary Means: The UN and the Authorization of the use of Force in the 21st Century).

2. Career: Dr. John Becker is a licensed and practicing attorney and is the principal of John D. Becker, LLC. He recently served as a Presidential Management Fellow with the Small Business Administration and before that was a Deputy State Public Defender for the State of Colorado. Dr. Becker has also been a Lead Faculty for History and Humanities at Regis University and an Assistant Professor of Humanities at the Air Force Academy. He is a retired Army officer, who started his service as an enlisted soldier, subsequently attending Officer Candidate School and being commissioned in Field Artillery. He served as a commander and staff officer in tactical units in the U.S. and Italy including the 7th Infantry Division and 24th Infantry Division, where he was involved with operations in Somalia, Haiti, and Kuwait. He also taught at both the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York and the U.S. Air Force Academy. Dr. Becker has taught international relations and conflict resolution for several colleges and universities including the University of Denver’s Korbel School, Norwich University’s Diplomacy program, and Troy University and now, APUS.

3. Publications, associations, special highlights:
A. Co-contributor of Moral Dimensions of the Military Profession: Readings in Morality, War, and Leadership (1996 and 1997), and various articles and reviews in academic, professional, and military journals.
B. Governor and Board Member of multiple bar associations and community boards. Coached multiple youth sports teams.

4. Personal information: Dr. Becker is married and his wife is an Army JAG officer, who was recently deployed to Iraq. They have six children, two who are finishing their last year in high school, two who are finishing their undergraduate degree, and one son who is studying global affairs at New York University and the other son is working in Colorado. The Beckers love to travel and particularly cruise; most recently they were in Europe and South America. They also hike, workout, and ski. They have a year-old old German Shepard puppy and four cats, who often run the house.
