Biography - Christina A Nevel McGarvey

I grew up in Western Pennsylvania where I began my love for the sciences as a child. I graduated from Allegheny Clarion Valley High School, and went on to earn my Bachelors of Science Degree in Medical Technology from Gannon University, Erie, PA. My Medical Technology Certification was then earned from Saint Vincent Health Center School of Medical Technology.

After mastering the clinical microbiology laboratory, where I examined and tested patient’s samples for the presence of disease causing microorganisms, I went to graduate school. I earned my Master of Science Degree in Microbiology and Immunology, specializing in Infectious Disease Processes from Temple University School of Medicine, Philadelphia, PA. I studied an enzyme that was secreted by the original isolated bacterium that causes Legionnaires’ Disease.

My love of teaching motivated me to pursue my Doctoral degree so that I may teach biology in the undergraduate setting. I earned my PhD in Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Genetics from MCP-Hahnemann School of Medicine, Philadelphia, PA. I studied the coordinate regulation of mitochondrial genes in the urinary bladder in an experimental model of benign prostate hyperplasia.

After graduation, I opted to teach part time as I began to raise my children. I have experience teaching Microbiology, Parasitology, Mycology, Genetics, General Biology and Anatomy. I taught face to face courses at The Pennsylvania State University Abington Campus, Gwynedd Mercy College, Montgomery County Community College, Arcadia University, Lycoming College and Penn College of Technology. I have experience in online course writing and I have been facilitating online biology courses at several online institutions for approximately three and one half years. I really enjoy working with online students!

I recently relocated to North Eastern Missouri with my husband and two boys. We are getting used to the area.

I have been very active in my children’s schools, serving as President of the PTO, volunteering, teaching science gratis, serving as a Boy Scout registered adult, volunteering in soccer and coaching a first place winning Odyssey of the Mind team! In my “spare” time, I enjoy baking, decorating cakes, soccer, watching movies and cross stitching.
