Suzanne Nichols, Ph.D., serves as adjunct faculty in the School of Education. Suzanne obtained a Bachelor of Science in Education from Ohio University. She later obtained a Master of Education from the University of Rio Grande from Rio Grande, Ohio, before going on to complete a Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics Education from Ohio University. Suzanne completed and successfully defended her dissertation, Perception and Implementation of the Ohio Academic Content and Process Standards for Mathematics among Middle School Teachers, in August, 2010.
Suzanne is serving as the interim middle childhood coordinator for Ohio University-Chillicothe while teaching education and mathematics courses on two regional campuses as well as the main campus for Ohio University. In addition, she teaches graduate level education classes online for Ohio Dominican University and serves as a mathematics consultant to local school districts. Prior to moving to higher education, Suzanne taught grades 3 - 8 in the public school system for 16 years. Most of her service in the public school system was spent teaching mathematics in the middle school in grades 6 - 8. Suzanne spent many years serving as the math/science specialist and lead mentor for her school district during the day and as the director of an after school program in the evenings.
Suzanne, as a new Ph.D., has just started writing for publication. Her contributions to scholarly literature include an occasional paper which was published in the Proceedings of the Third ACCLAIM Research Symposium and Theorizing Place-based Education: An Essay Review. Suzanne, in her position as editor of the Rural Mathematics Educator, also wrote several articles and editorial pieces.
In order to remain current in the field of mathematics teacher education, Suzanne participates in several professional organizations. She holds membership in National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), Ohio Council of Teachers of Mathematics (OCTM), Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE), and Appalachian Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AAMTE). Suzanne serves as secretary of AAMTE.
Suzanne, a national board certified teacher, is the proud mother of two children and grandparent to six. Much of her free time is spent with her family in extra curricular activities, but she also enjoys reading, listening to audio books, taking long walks on the beach, and exploring quaint out of the way places. Suzanne was born and raised in rural southern Ohio and is proud to be a farm girl from the heart of America.
