I am currently a full-time instructor at Calhoun Community College at the Decatur Campus located in Decatur, Alabama. However, I was an adjunct instructor for them for a few years prior to being hired full-time. I was the Lead Faculty (Department Chair minus the pay) for the Social Sciences Department through the end of the Fall 2010 semester. This was a position that I had held for over six years. As part of the Social Science Department, I teach both parts of World and United States History, as well as, American National Government. I have taught these courses in the classroom and online for the past 10 years. During my first three years at the college, I also taught Macroeconomics.
I have been teaching online for about ten years now and have used a variety of Learning Management systems. Presently, Calhoun has switched to Blackboard9.1, but prior to that we were using Web CT 8. I have also taught United States History, Japanese and Chinese History for Columbia College using Desire2Learn.
Prior to being hired at Calhoun, I taught Social Studies at Bob Jones High School in Madison, Alabama for four years. While there, I taught United States History, AP U.S. History, Government, and Economics.
As far as education goes, it seems like I have been a life-long learner. I joined the U.S. Air Force out of high school and started working on their Associate of Applied Science degree in Weather. I stayed in the Air Force for twenty plus years. My Air Force Specialty was Weather Observing and Forecasting.
While in the Air Force, I completed the A.A.S. degree and then started on my Bachelor's Degree. I received my Bachelors in Government and Politics at the University of Maryland, College Park, Asian Division in Yokota, Japan. Once I retired, I returned to my home state of Illinois and entered Illinois State University were I completed a Master of Science in Political Science and another Masters and my Doctorate in History. I have also completed several hours of Economics at the Masters level, but have decided not to complete that degree. However, while at Illinois State, I worked as an archivist and later as a teaching assistant for the Asian Civilization courses.
Unfortunately, it seems that there is little time for hobbies at the present, but when given the chance my wife, son, and I enjoy traveling with most of our travels having a historical aspect to them. I enjoy reading everything from history to fiction in what little spare time that I can find also.
