Biography - Tommy R Rector


Professor Tommy Rector lives in Brandon, MS with his lovely bride of 23 years, Brenda, who is also a professor here at APUS. Professor Rector is a proud veteran of the Air Force and Army. He held the highest rank of Captain, after becoming a Non-Commissioned Officer. His last post was in the U.S. Air Force Auxiliary where he served as a Squadron Commander and the Mississippi State Director of Logistics. He commanded one of the first search and rescue teams on the ground during the catastrophe of Hurricane Katrina, for which he received the Commander of the Year and numerous awards from the USAF and other agencies.

Professor Rector’s parents have spent a lifetime dedicating their lives to the public as civil servants. Their family have numerous military personnel who have all served their country honorably. His children 22, 21, and 19 are all veterans as well. In addition, his family is also very entwined in public service with firemen, policemen, EMTs, and his mom and aunts in nursing.

Professor Rector holds a Bachelor’s degree in Electronics, Airways Systems and a Master’s degree in Hazardous Material Management from Jackson State University. He does have a lifelong love for teaching and is pursuing his Doctorate of Mangement in Orgaqnizaitonal Leadership, from the University of Phoenix. He and his wife own an emergency services training company and a work from home business as well. They teach CPR, First Aid, and Defibrillation licensed by the American Red Cross and Community Emergency Response Team courses licensed by Meridian Community College and the Mississippi Department of Homeland Security. They are also sitting members of the Mississippi State Citizen’s Corp Council. They also competed in the Alliance for Graduate Education for Mississippi Winter Scholar Symposium in January of 2009. They received an award of second place for their tireless research and work on the CAMEO, MARPLOT, and ALOHA systems. The presentation was awarded the second place in the state of Mississippi for setting up a system for operating emergencies and emergency responses on campuses with the maps, fire, security, and management of the situation.

Professor Rector has a profound love for his family, as stated earlier. He enjoys spending as much time with his family as possible. Other hobbies include watching the Atlanta Braves with his wife, sons, daughter and brother and loves to teach. He had a lifelong yearning to teach that has taken a back seat to his professional life. Since 2006, he and his wife have owned a training company. He will be teaching in the School of Management at APUS in the area that he loves and incorporated his professional life. He will be in the Logistics and Transportation department, where he can join his love for logistics and hazardous material for a very long time at APUS.
