Richard Hines is the Director of History and Military History Programs for the American Public University System. Richard received his B.A. from Carroll College in Helena, Montana, and his M.A. and Ph.D., in history, from Washington State University. Professor Hines has been involved in long-distance education for many years, both as an instructor and a developer of U.S. History, Military History, and World and Western Civilizations courses. Richard taught at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington. At that university, he instructed courses in U.S. history, military history, and world civilizations. He has worked closely with some state agencies to create histories of those states' National Guard units. Additionally, he has published articles specifically related to this nation's military involvement, and is currently in the process of finishing a book on Illinois and the Civil War. Besides his writings, Richard has worked closely with the community of Pullman and has been responsible for gaining recognition for some of the town's structures and placing them on the National Register for Historic Places. Richard is a single father with three sons at home between the ages of 14 and 7
