Dr. Christy A. Franklin received her BS degree in Biotechnology from the University Nebraska and PhD from the University Nebraska Medical Center. Her dissertation titled, Regulation of the Bcl-2 family of cell death proteins in the LNCaP prostate cancer cell line progression model, focused on cell death, specifically, how cancer cells fail to die and lead to the progressive spread of disease and the ultimate expiration of the host.
Dr. Franklin currently performs intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring during brain and spine surgeries for a private medical company. She monitors patients’ nervous systems using sophisticated computer and medical equipment to ensure that the nerves are not damaged during operations.
In 2005, she joined the Eppley Institute for Research in Cancer and Allied Diseases with a National Institutes of Health research fellowship and conducted studies in pancreatic cancer. She is the principal founder and holds a pending patent on a diagnostic antibody, named MUC1NSEA, for the early detection of pancreatic cancer.
Prior to joining the Eppley Institute, Dr. Franklin served as a research scientist at the US EPA Neurotoxicology Division and performed studies in developmental neurotoxicology. At the EPA, she designed high-throughput tests to use as screens to determine the toxicity of teratogens.
Her post doctoral research studies at Boystown National Research Hospital focused on the generation of transgenic mice to use as models for the neurologic defects that led to deafness and blindness. In addition to her contributions to the gene knockout mouse, Clarin-1, she generated polyclonal antibodies to human mutant proteins responsible for hearing and blindness diseases.
Dr. Franklin (Rothermund) has peer-reviewed research publications in scholarly journals and actively consults with research teams at the Eppley Institute, University Nebraska, and Boystown National Research Hospital. She has presented scientific seminars and lectures nationwide and worldwide
Dr. Franklin lives in the Midwest with her husband and enjoys outdoor activities including motorcycle riding, fishing, and gardening.
