Heather York earned her BA in Anthropology from Vassar College and her MA in Anthropology from The University of Oklahoma. She is currently a Doctoral Candidate in the School of Biomedical Sciences at Kent State University, where she is researching forensic aging techniques. In addition to teaching for APUS, Heather is a consultant with the Center for Constructive Justice, a forensic anthropology group with domestic and international projects to recover and identify the mortal remains of victims of atrocities and natural disasters, with a major focus on underdeveloped and destabilized regions of the world. Previously, she served as Deputy Director of the Forensic Monitoring Project of Physicians for Human Rights in Bosnia-Herzegovina. In this position, she monitored and provided technical assistance in the location, exhumation, and postmortem identification of victims of the 1992-1995 Bosnian Conflict. Heather has been teaching and publishing in Biology and Anthropology for more than 15 years. She is originally from Oklahoma City, and has lived in New York, Illinois, Ohio, Sarajevo, Banja Luka, and Tuzla. She currently resides in Arizona with her husband, Ryan, and their three small daughters. They enjoy hiking and camping in the desert.
