Tamrala G Swafford

Dr. Swafford is an Ethnohistorian specializing in 20th century community development strategies of the Cherokee Indians in North Carolina and Oklahoma with subspecialities in Environmental History and Latin American History. She earned a PhD in American Indian History from Arizona State University, an MA in American History/Cherokee Studies from Western Carolina University, and a MA in English from Jacksonville State University.

Dr. Swafford has taught on the Pine Ridge Indian reservation, for the University of Oklahoma, Arizona State University, Columbia Southern University, and the University of Maryland culminating in over eight years of classroom and online teaching experience.

Having lived among Indian communities in Alabama, North Carolina, South Dakota, Oklahoma, and Arizona, Dr. Swafford constantly seeks to educate others on the accurate history of native peoples and the continuous struggles present in Indian communities throughout the Americas. As a descendent of the Cherokee and Creek nations, Dr. Swafford maintains a particular interest in southeastern Indian tribal communities and the significance of traditional institutions that have survived into the twenty-first century.
