Biography - Joseph A Esposito


Joseph A. Esposito has had a lifelong passion for history, government and learning. After receiving his B.A. degree in history (Phi Beta Kappa) and M.A. in journalism from The Pennsylvania State University, he went on to work in the fields of government, writing, nonprofit work and education. He served in three presidential administrations, most recently as Deputy Under Secretary for International Affairs at the U.S. Department of Education.

Among other government assignments was an eleven-year stint at the U.S. Agency for International Development, where he served as the agency’s Narcotics Affairs Coordinator and in other roles. He was a working group chair for the Commission for Assistance to a Free Cuba, which submitted its report to President Bush in 2004.

Mr. Esposito also has been Director of The Center for the Study of Catholic Higher Education as well as a full-time writer. He has taught undergraduate history courses, mostly online, since 2005. He has taught history at Regent University and Northern Virginia Community College, and has been on the social foundations of education graduate adjunct faculty at the University of Virginia’s Northern Virginia Center.

Mr. Esposito has earned four of his five master’s degrees (George Mason University, Georgetown University, University of Pennsylvania and the University of Virginia) as a working adult. He also completed all work but the dissertation for a doctorate in history at American University.
