Biography - Cecilia D Selbrede


Professor Cecilia DeSilva Selbrede received her B. A. in Biology from Temple University in 1987 and her Juris Doctorate degree from Rutgers University, School of Law, Camden, New Jersey in 1990. She is admitted to practice law in Pennsylvania, Washington State and the Commonwealth of Virginia.

At present, Professor Selbrede does pro bono work for Legal Services of Northern Virginia. She received the Harry L. Carrico 2008 Pro Bono Award for cochairing a team of attorneys who provide estate planning documents to low income and elderly clients in Northern Virginia.

Professor Selbrede enjoys litigation and has worked in several litigation fields as a result of the geographical moves necessitated by her spouse’s military duties. She was a prosecuting attorney in the criminal division in Seattle, Washington and later practiced insurance defense with a civil firm. After a transfer to Virginia, she worked in family law, primarily on child custody cases for the indigent population. A tour in Hawaii allowed her the privilege of volunteering with Navy Judge Advocate General officers in the criminal defense section at Pearl Harbor.

As the wife of a Submarine Officer in the U.S. Navy, Professor Selbrede has had the honor to meet and work with high caliber servicemen and their families. Professor Selbrede, her husband and their three children,triplets, currently live in Northern Virginia. She is active in her children’s school and in church programs on the local military base.
