Hello, my name is Jennifer Szymanski. In addition to teaching at APUS, I work for U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). I have worked for the agency since 1992. Except for the first 6 months, all my work has been within the Endangered Species program. My official title is Regional Section 7 Coordinator for Region 3 (Region 3 covers 8 Midwestern states). Section 7 refers a section of the Endangered Species Act of 1973 which requires Federal agencies to use their authorities to conserve threatened and endangered species. To assist them with this mandate, Federal agencies are required to consult with USFWS. USFWS consultation biologists work with Federal agency personnel to review, and if necessary modify, their proposed actions to ensure their actions comport with ESA. As a regional coordinator, my duties include providing statutory and policy guidance to our Ecological Services Field Offices, coordinating regional or national level consultations, and drafting USFWS regulation and policy.
I also spend a significant amount of my time as a decision analyst. In this role, I assist our biologists in making logical, transparent decisions for particularly complex ESA issues. Prior to this position, I worked as a field biologist in our Bloomington, Indiana Field Office. My work in this Field Office focused on endangered species recovery, wetlands regulation, and fish and wildlife habitat restoration.
