Mark Steven Fliegelman, Ed.D
Instructor, Department of History and Military History


Dr. Mark Steven Fliegelman is a retired soldier residing in the Tampa, Florida area with his wife Lynn, and seven of his nine children; Raven, Netsanet, Kibrom, Henok, Saba, Haftom, and Biruk. Six of these children Mark and Lynn adopted from Ethiopia. He has two other adult children, Daniel and Diana. He works as an undergraduate history instructor in the classroom and online, enjoying the endless Florida summer, and riding his motorcycle.

Originally from NJ, Mark has a BS in Social Science from St. Thomas Aquinas College where he studied history under Bradley T. Gericke and Brian Maddox from the West Point Department of History. His MA in Military Studies, American Revolution, is from American Military University. In progress is a Masters Certificate in Ancient and Classical Studies. He also has a Doctorate in Educational Leadership, Higher Education from Argosy University, Tampa.

Mark served in the Army from 1976 to 1980 as an artilleryman in the 18th Airborne Corps and the 2nd Infantry Division in Korea. After a stint in the reserve components, he returned to active duty retaking Basic Combat Training and joining the infantry from 1986 until his retirement as a First Sergeant in 2003 from 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry, 101st Airborne Division.

During his 27 years of service, he was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division, 25th Infantry Division, 2nd Infantry Division, and 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). In addition to serving in every Infantry duty position from Rifleman to First Sergeant, he has performed duties as instructor and developed curriculum for courses in Military Operations in Urban Terrain, Air Assault Operations, Machine Gun Leaders,and Airborne and Air Assault Drop Zone and Landing Zone Operations Courses.

Mark spent three years as a Drill Sergeant in a Basic Combat Training Company and served as a Tactical NCO and program integrator teaching Military Science and Leadership at the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY for 3 years. His awards include Army Meritorious Service Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, The Meritorious Unit Citation, the Expert and Combat Infantry Badges, Master Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, Pathfinders Badge, and Drill Sergeant Badge.

In addition to teaching History for American Military University, he also teaches History and International Studies for The Art Institute of Tampa. Mark has also taught History for Southwest Florida College in the classroom and online and at Hillsborough Community College. He is a member of the Omohundro Institute of Early American History and Culture.
