Dr. Macon is a recognized researcher and authority across the academic areas of literature, composition, history, education, and the interdisciplinary humanities. He has won many honors and awards, including APUS Faculty of the Year in 2009 in the School of Education.

Besides his consulting and teaching responsibilities, he designs courses in literature, composition, and graduate education for several institutions of higher learning. Dr. Macon has developed workshops and has conducted professional development seminars across the United States in consultation with educational organizations and institutions. He has also been a keynote speaker at journalism conventions and conferences in Wyoming, New Mexico, and Texas. Additionally, he is affiliated with several professional education journals devoted to online education and adult learning theory.

Dr. Macon holds six degrees, the highest of which is a doctorate from Northcentral University. His other alma maters are Sul Ross State University, Charter Oak State College, California State University Dominguez Hills, American Public University, and Northwestern State University of Louisiana. The title of his doctoral dissertation is "Student Satisfaction with Online Courses versus Traditional Courses: A Meta-Analysis," and his masters thesis title is "Folklore and its Relevance to the Chicano Literary Experience."

Dr. Macon has experience not only at the university and community college levels but also in K-12. He is a certified public school educator in New Mexico and Texas with licenses for superintendent, principal, librarian, and classroom teacher with credentials in English, Social Studies, Physical Education, Special Education, English as a Second Language (ESL), Early Childhood Education, Gifted Education, and Technology Education.

When possible, aside from his professional scholarly responsibilities of teaching, designing instruction, researching, and writing, Dr. Macon devotes himself and resources to numerous charities and public school organizations and sports. He has also been active in civic affairs, having been a member of two city boards and commissions in his home city.
