Stanley D Carpenter

Professor Stanley D.M. Carpenter teaches courses in Air and Land Warfare, Military History and European History from the Ancient World to the Modern period. He is a Professor of Strategy and Policy, Strategy and Policy Division Head, College of Distance Education, and Command Historian at the U. S. Naval War College, Newport, RI. Additionally, he directs the Naval War College's Homeland Security and Homeland Defence (HS/HD) elective program.

He has taught as an Adjunct Professor of History for Salve Regina University, Newport, RI, Hawaii Pacific University, Honolulu, HI, Norwich University, Northfields, VT; Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL, and Tallahassee Community College, Tallahassee, FL.

Professor Carpenter holds the following degrees:

Ph.D. in British Military History, Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL, 1998
M.Litt. in Scottish History, University of St. Andrews, St. Andrews, Scotland, 1978
AB with Honors in History, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC, 1975.
Additionally, he has completed graduate coursework in War Studies at King's College, University of London (1977) and holds a diploma in National Security and Strategic Studies from the U.S. Naval War College (2000).

Professor Carpenter served as a US Naval officer in both Active and Reserve Components from 1979 to 2009, retiring with the rank of Captain. In his Navy career, Captain Carpenter held three Commanding Officer billets, an Executive Officer and a Chief Staff Officer billet. He was a Surface Warfare Officer, serving on Destroyer and Amphibious Squadron Staffs, and on cruisers, destroyers and amphibious assault ships. Additionally, as a Navy Emergency Preparedness Liaison Officer (NEPLO) to FEMA Region II, New York City, he became a specialist in Homeland Security, Consequence Management, and Defense Support of Civil Authorities (DSCA).

Professor Carpenter has published several monographs, articles, and other scholarly publications, largely in the fields of the British Civil Wars, American War for Independence (American Revolution), and wars of the 20th Century. His current project is a history of the Southern Campaign of the American War for Independence from the British strategic perspective.
