Biography - John Kreis


Dr. Steven Kreis holds a dual B.A. in Philosophy and Political Science from Boston University (1977) and a M.A. and Ph.D. in History from the University of Missouri-Columbia (1984, 1990). He has taught European intellectual, social, and economic history as well as courses in the humanities at the college level since 1988 in south Florida and most recently in Raleigh, NC. His M.A. research concentrated on the rise of political radicalism in England during the age of the French Revolution while his Ph.D. dissertation treated the origins and diffusion of the scientific management movement in Britain, 1890-1945. His teaching fields include Western civilization, European intellectual history, 18th/19th Europe, Modern Europe, 20th Century Russian and Soviet History, and Historiography. In 1996, Dr. Kreis developed The History Guide, an online textbook in western civilization that includes ninety full-text lectures, and which is used as a primary textbook in a number of schools worldwide. He was also responsible for all the online content for the 14-16th editions of W. W. Norton's Western Civilizations textbook and wrote the Instructor's Manual and Test Bank. Dr. Kreis is an avid windsurfer and has coached youth soccer for the past thirteen years in Raleigh, NC, where he lives with his wife and three children. "Sapere Aude!"
