Biography - Chris M Beam


Since 1989, Christopher M. Beam has taught a wide variety of topics in history both as a lecturer in the Department of History at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, and as a part-time instructor in the University of Maine System and other local colleges. He has offered courses on the Vietnam War, the Nixon presidency, modern political conservatism, documentary preservation, public policymaking at the local level, all periods of American history, and all phases of Western civilization. From 1988 to 2005, he was also director of the Edmund S. Muskie Archives and college archivist at Bates. From 1977 to 1988 he worked at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. During this period he spent more than four years processing the Nixon White House tapes.

A native of Brunswick, Maine, he graduated from Williams College in 1967; served three years in the U.S. Marine Corps, including a tour in Vietnam (1968-1969); and earned a Ph.D. in history from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His major academic interests are the Vietnam War, the Nixon presidency and the Watergate scandal. He is married with three children and two grandchildren. His interests include outdoor activities such as hiking and backpacking, canoeing and kayaking, swimming, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, and race walking.
