Biography - Robert B Kane


Robert B. Kane was born in Astoria, New York on August 13, 1951, and lived in South Carolina from 1955 until 1976. He attended Clemson University, 1969-73, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Secondary Education, History; the University of South Carolina, 1973-1975, earning a Master of Arts degree in European History; George Washington University, 1977-79, earning an Education Specialist degree in Higher Education; and the University of California, Los Angeles, 1984-1985, 1991-97, earning a Doctorate of Philosophy in European History.
After receiving his commission through the Air Force Reserve Officers Corps at Clemson University and his master’s degree, Dr. Kane entered active duty on August 19, 1976. During his 27 years in the Air Force, he held a variety of information management, personnel management, education, and command positions at Air Force installations in Virginia, Alaska, California, Oklahoma, Spain, Germany, and Alabama. He retired from the Air Force as a lieutenant colonel in Jul 2003 after serving two years as the Chief, Instruction Division, International Officer School, Ira C. Eaker College of Professional Development, Air University, Maxwell Air Force Base, AL. From Jul 2003 to Jul 2005, he taught social studies to secondary school students in the Montgomery County, AL, School System. From Jul 2005 to Feb 2009, he served as the deputy historian for the Air Armament Center, Eglin Air Force Base, FL. In early Mar 2009, Dr. Kane was reassigned to the Air Force Historical Research Agency, Maxwell AFB, AL, working in the Organizational History Branch.
Since 1977, Dr. Kane has also served as an adjunct history professor for St. Leo’s University, FL; the University of Alaska, AK; Western Oklahoma State College, OK; City Colleges of Chicago, Germany; Chapman University, CA; American Public University, VA; and Troy University, AL. In this capacity he has taught numerous courses in American, European, and Middle Eastern history in class and through the internet.
Dr. Kane has received numerous Air Force awards and decorations, including the 1984 Outstanding Company Grade Executive Support Officer for the Air Force Systems Command, the Air Force Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters, and the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal with five oak leaf clusters. He was also recognized as an Outstanding Young American in 1985 and by Who’s Who in the South and Southwest 1999-2000; Who’s Who in America for 2001-2001, 2001-2002, 2002-2003, and 2003-2004; and America’s Registry of Outstanding Professionals, 2002-2003. In 2008, he received the Civilian Personnel Exemplary Service Award.
Dr. Kane published Disobedience and Conspiracy in the German Army, 1918-45, in 2002, which was reprinted in paperback in 2008, and numerous book reviews in the Journal of Military History, Airpower History, and Air and Space Power Journal. He is a lifetime member the Air Force Association and a member of the American Historical Association and the Society of Military History. Dr. Kane has presented several papers and served as a panel commentator at numerous annual conferences of these professional history organizations.
He is married to the former Anita Louise van Deursen of Bussum, The Netherlands, and has two children, Virginia and David.
