Biography - Steven Gans



Steven received his B.A. in Philosophy from Queens College in 1963 and his M.A. and Ph.D. in Philosophy from Pennsylvania State University in 1967.


He has held various teaching posts at the University of Maryland, Undergraduate and Overseas Divisions, Richmond College, Windham College and Pennsylvania State University.


Steven has extensive experience teaching all courses in the undergraduate philosophy curriculum. His special area of interest is Ethics, theoretical and applied.


He has a career long interest and involvement in innovative and experiential learning for student, professional, managerial and clinical groups and individuals.


Until 2004, Steven was Director of Professional Services, Online Center of Excellence.


Steven established the London branch of the Institute for Management Studies, a worldwide program of executive briefings for senior managers of major global and UK companies from 1984-2001.


He founded and directed the University of Maryland’s Study in London Program from 1979-1993.


From 1972-1981 he was Associate Director of Antioch University’s Individualized Program in Counseling and Psychotherapy. He was co-founder of the program.


From 1976-1984 Steven was a member of the University of Maryland, Overseas Division. He taught a variety of Philosophy Courses to Military and Diplomatic personnel based in the UK.


From 1972-1981 he also trained as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist at the Philadelphia Association, founded by R.D. Laing.(world famous existential psychiatrist). He has was a member of the Association and in private practice from 1982 –2001 and a member of the training committee from 1989-2000.


He has lectured and written extensively for professional groups and journals and has published two books and launched a web site (one co-authored with Dr. Leon Redler);
