Master of Education:  Administration and Supervision

The Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Administration and Supervision degree is designed for educational leaders who wish to specialize in educational administration and supervision and who seek exemplary skills and analytical capabilities related to administration and leadership. This program provides practical applications in educational administration and supervision that will help participants acquire the knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors that can lead to state certification or endorsement. The program is designed to prepare qualified persons for a variety of leadership roles to include: (1) principal/assistant principal and other school-site administrative and supervisory positions in the public schools; (2) federal and state governmental positions in educational administration and supervision; (3) other areas of educational administration.  Completion of the degree leads to eligibility for certification in the state of West Virginia.

The M.Ed. in Administration and Supervision program is guided by the Praxis II, ELCC, ISTE, and WVDE standards.  It comprises 11 formal online courses at 3 credit hours each, plus an internship worth 3 hours, for a total of 36 credit hours. Direct school observational opportunities and experiences are also included in the curriculum. 

Degree Program Objectives

The Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Administration and Supervision seeks the following specific learning outcomes of its graduates. Graduates in this degree program will be able to:

  • Manage a school setting with awareness of the historical, social, political, legal, and economic influences on education, showing effective leadership and also recognizing the importance of community and collaboration.
  • Demonstrate effective interpersonal communication skills in order to work well with school personnel, pupils, and parents, acknowledging and appreciating diversity in its many forms and being able to assess and instruct without influence of bias.
  • Use educational technology as an effective tool to promote student learning as well as a means to improve communication among colleagues, staff, parents, students, and the larger community.
  • Develop school policy, implement strategic plans and new programs, exhibit problem-solving skills, analyze and respond to emerging issues and trends in education, and put into practice the accepted norms and principles of educational research.
  • Manage daily school operations including record keeping, finances, and reports, and show effective leadership in the areas of supervision, evaluation, professional development, legal issues, and school reform.
  • Evaluate and effectively use performance-based assessments, and implement assessment, instruction, evaluation, intervention plans as appropriate for diverse learner needs.
  • Use research methods appropriately to review and critique educational studies, and also design a research project that is applicable to a school environment.
  • Apply educational law to the legal and ethical issues governing K-12 education, including confidentiality, liability, church/state conflicts, diversity, and other topics that affect schools.
